Can’t believe it has already been a month since our trip to Maui. We meant to post this weeks ago but then life happened – be on the look out for that post. 🙂
Here are some highlights from our trip:
After a non-turblunat, smooth flight with Delta, we were super excited to see the Welcome to Maui Sign.
Our first two nights were in Ka’anapali Beach, right next to the south end of Black Rock.
We weren’t brave enough to make the 32ft plunge into the water but we enjoyed watching the locals and brave tourists make the plunge. But we were mistaken as locals often. Most thought we were visiting from another island. Man, if only that were true.
The Sunday that we were there we attended Mass at Maria Lanakila Parish.
In the back of the church was this beautiful mosaic of St. Damien of Molokai. There was a plaque on the wall which stated that he worshipped in that very church! So cool! Turns out St. Damien’s feast day was that very Sunday – October 11. St. Damien of Molokai, pray for us!
After Mass, we had lunch at Cheese Burger in Lahaina.
Then dinner at Leilani’s on the Beach to get their famous Hula Pie for dessert!
The next day, we started out by going North to snorkel at Honolua Bay. It was a little tricky getting into the water since it wasn’t a sandy beach but rather full of big rocks. After maneuvering our way into the water, it was well worth it.
For lunch we stopped at Local Food in Lahaina to get some spam musubi. This place had the best spam musubi by far!
We also walked around Old Town Lahaina for a bit and encountered the majestic Banyan Tree. This tree is over 150 years old. It was truly incredible.
For the remainder of our trip we stayed in Kihei. We were advised from friends to be sure to go to Local Boys for shaved ice and to try it with ice cream on the bottom. It was sooo good. We have to admit we didn’t go to other places to compare and didn’t need to. The shaved ice there was perfect. The creme that is placed on top of the shaved ice is a special recipe that is more than just condensed milk and the syrups have less the sugar, so it’s not too sweet. The MacNut ice cream was to die for!
While in Kihei we ate some good food and had more spam musubi.
We also went to daily Mass at St. Theresa Parish in Kihei.
We had a late flight so before we left this beautiful island we had ‘linner’ at Mama’s Fish House. This was the only day that it really poured down rain. But it was a nice tropical rain that we could walk in, nothing like the ice cold Washington rain.
We snorkeled almost every day and saw SIX sea turtles. The only evidence of this awesomeness was seconds of a GoPro video filming the back of a turtle swimming away. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to capture any epic photos of them but for us, those six turtles represented each of our precious babies.
And of course, we witnessed these awe-inspiring sunsets.
We cannot tell you enough of how we fell in LOVE with Maui- the places, the people, the nature, the lifestyle – everything. We are dreaming of when we can go back to this slice of heaven.
Other highlights were: Road to Hana and remembering our children by celebrating the Wave of Light.
Praying for you,
Rex & Rachel
What an AMAZING trip!! I love how you capture things so beautifully in film and in writing so we almost feel like we were there!! Almost…. 😉
Wow, what a great vacation and such beautiful pictures! I’m laughing about how y’all were mistaken for natives. You guys don’t look Hawaiian! LOL. But my biggest thought is, here I am almost 50 years old and have never been to Hawaii. One of Andy’s brothers (Air Force) was stationed there for 4 years, but we had no such luck. I think I need to put it on my bucket list!
Yes, do it!!! You won’t regret it.
